Pulau Semakau Offshore
Landfill Project

In anticipation of increasing refuse load and near to capacity dumping grounds on mainland Singapore, the Ministry of Environment embarked on this mega  project, involving the amalgamation of Pulau Semakau and Sakeng Island into one big offshore landfill dumping ground for incinerated refuse.

Designed by SPECS Consultants and built by both Toa Corporation of Japan in  Contract No. 1 and local firm Antara Koh Pte Ltd in Contract No. 6, it was completed simultaneously with the Tuas Incinerator Wharf in early 1999 at a cost of S$2 billion.  An approximate area of 136,000 square metres of concrete wharf structure exposed to tidal splash zones, notably the piles, pilecaps, soffit, etc., were impregnated with Dry-Treat BHN IBTEO silane to protect against chloride ion induced corrosion.
